Welcome to Midwest Tactical’s FAQ! We’ve compiled the most common questions about airsoft, milsim, starter kits, gear, and more.
General Airsoft Questions
1. What is airsoft?
Airsoft is a recreational shooting sport where players use replica firearms that shoot 6mm plastic BBs. It’s similar to paintball but uses realistically styled guns and players are eliminated when hit by a BB.
2. Is airsoft safe?
Yes, when proper safety rules are followed. The most important rule is to always wear ANSI-rated eye protection. Never remove your goggles on the field, and treat all airsoft guns as if they’re loaded.
3. Does airsoft hurt?
It can sting, especially at close range, but most players describe it as a quick snap or bug bite. Wearing long sleeves, pants, and gloves reduces discomfort significantly.
4. Do I need a license to own an airsoft gun in the US?
Generally, no license is required in the US. However, some states and cities have specific restrictions. Check your local laws before purchasing.
5. What’s the difference between airsoft and paintball?
Airsoft uses smaller 6mm BBs and realistic replica guns, while paintball uses larger gelatin capsules filled with paint. Airsoft is often more realistic for milsim, while paintball has visible hits.
6. Can adults play airsoft?
Absolutely! While many kids play, the majority of airsoft players are adults. Airsoft is a popular sport for teenagers and adults of all ages.
7. What age do I need to be to buy from Midwest Tactical?
You must be 18+ to purchase airsoft guns and 13+ to purchase accessories like BBs and magazines. ID verification is required upon delivery for airsoft guns.
Starter Kits & Getting Started
8. What’s included in an airsoft starter kit?
Most starter kits include an airsoft gun (AEG rifle), battery, charger, magazine, carry bag, and sometimes eye protection. Check the product description for exact contents.
9. Are starter kits good for beginners?
Yes! Starter kits are designed for new players and offer the best value. They include everything you need to start playing right away.
10. Do I need to buy anything else with a starter kit?
You’ll want to add eye protection (if not included), extra BBs, and possibly a battery charger gun case. We recommend getting camouflage clothing and tactical gear for milsim events.
11. What’s the best airsoft gun for beginners?
AEG (Automatic Electric Gun) rifles are best for beginners. They’re reliable, easy to maintain, and battery-powered. Starter kit rifles are perfect for new players.
12. Can I upgrade my starter kit gun later?
Yes! Most AEG starter kit guns can be upgraded with better springs, gears, and inner barrels. However, don’t upgrade until you’re familiar with the gun.
FPS & Performance
13. What does FPS mean?
FPS stands for “feet per second” and measures the velocity of BBs exiting your gun. Higher FPS means farther range and more impact.
14. What FPS is safe for airsoft?
Most fields have FPS limits: 350–400 FPS for automatic fire, 400–450 FPS for semi-auto, and 500+ FPS for sniper rifles. Always check field rules.
15. Will my gun’s FPS change over time?
Yes, FPS can increase slightly as the gun breaks in. Cold weather decreases FPS, while hot weather increases it. Battery quality also affects FPS.
16. What BB weight should I use?
Lighter BBs (0.20g–0.25g) are good for outdoor play and maximum range. Heavier BBs (0.28g–0.40g) are better for accuracy and indoor play. Starter kits usually come with 0.20g BBs.
Battery & Power
17. What type of battery does my airsoft gun use?
Most starter kit AEGs use NiMH or LiPo batteries. Check your product description for the exact battery type and size.
18. How long does an airsoft battery last?
Battery life depends on capacity and usage. A typical battery lasts 150–300 rounds per charge. High-capacity batteries last longer.
19. Do I need a special charger for my battery?
Yes, use a charger designed for your battery type (NiMH or LiPo). LiPo batteries require a smart charger with balance charging for safety.
20. What’s the difference between NiMH and LiPo batteries?
NiMH batteries are safer and easier for beginners. LiPo batteries provide more power and consistent performance but require careful handling and proper charging.
Milsim & Gameplay
21. What is milsim?
Milsim (military simulation) is airsoft that emphasizes realistic military tactics, uniforms, and missions. Players wear camouflage, follow chain of command, and complete objectives.
22. What should I wear to a milsim event?
Wear camouflage clothing (BDU, multicam, or any camo pattern), tactical boots with ankle support, long sleeves, and protective gloves. Don’t wear brand-new gear on your first milsim.
23. How is milsim different from regular airsoft?
Milsim has structured missions, team objectives, realistic gear requirements, and often lasts longer (full day or weekend events). Regular airsoft is more casual kill-or-be-killed gameplay.
24. Do I need special gear for milsim?
Yes, you’ll want camouflage clothing, tactical boots, a plate carrier or chest rig, and a backpack for water and extra gear. Don’t use brand-new goggles on your first big milsim.
25. How do I prepare for my first milsim?
Read the event documentation, prepare your gear ahead of time, break in your boots, pack extra socks and water, and don’t be intimidated. Ask experienced players for advice.
26. What are the basic airsoft rules?
Always wear eye protection, call your hits when hit, don’t blind fire, maintain minimum engagement distance, never remove your goggles on the field, and follow field-specific rules.
Ordering & Shipping
27. Can I ship airsoft guns to P.O. Boxes?
No, airsoft guns require a physical address for delivery. P.O. Boxes are not accepted for airsoft gun shipments.
28. Are there states where you can’t ship airsoft guns?
Yes, some states like California, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts have strict airsoft laws. We may not ship to these locations.
Care & Maintenance
29. How do I clean my airsoft gun?
Clean the inner barrel regularly with cleaning rods and patches. Lubricate moving parts with silicone oil. Store the gun unloaded in a case.
30. Can I use my airsoft gun in rain?
Light rain is usually fine, but avoid submerging your gun in water. Dry your gun thoroughly after wet play to prevent rust and damage.
